M62 traffic LIVE as motorway SHUT both ways after ‘lorry hits barrier’ in crash
Drivers are being warned to expect long delays on the M62 following a lorry crash. The motorway is shut in both directions near Warrington this morning following a collision which has caused a fuel spillage. It follows a lorry hitting a barrier on the A49 Winwick Road, which runs above the motorway, with fuel leaking to the M62 below.
National Highways says there is a large diesel spillage at junction nine, in Winwick, as a result of the crash. It is warning drivers to expect delays of 45 minutes approaching the scene in either direction this morning (June 13). A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At 3am on Friday, June 13, police were called to reports of a collision on A49, Winwick Road, Warrington.
"The collision involved a lorry which had collided with the railings on the bridge over the M62. "The M62 is currently closed in both directions as a result, with a diversion up and over the junction. "The closure is expected to stay in place for several hours and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
There are not believed to be reports of any injuries." A National Highways spokesperson posted on X: "The M62 remains closed both ways within J9 for Warrington following a collision involving a HGV. "Contractors on scene are working to clear a large diesel spillage on the carriageway.
