‘Severe’ Surrey M25 delays after crash between horse box and van near Chertsey

Drivers on the M25 on Wednesday, June 11, found themselves caught in "severe" delays due to a crash between two vehicles near Chertsey[1]. The incident took place clockwise on the M25[2] carriageway just before the junction 11 turn of for the A320 St Peter's Way. Two lanes shut just after 1.10pm to move a van and horsebox off the carriageway.

Emergency services arrived at the scene alongside National Highways traffic officers. No serious injuries[3] were reported, according to South East Coast Ambulance Service, however one was taken to hospital for a check over. Surrey Police[4] were also in attendance. One lane reopened just before 4pm, however by this point traffic had become severe.

Travel time reached 35 minutes with seven miles of congestion, it was reported, and there were delays both clockwise and anticlockwise due to onlookers extending to Staines[5] ' junction 13 and the Wisley Interchange at junction 10. National Highways posted via X that additional care had to be taken, due to the nature of one of the vehicles. The post read: "One of the vehicles involved is transporting horses so extra care is required."

Traffic monitoring service, Inrix, reported: "Severe delays and one lane closed due to recovery work and earlier accident on M25 clockwise at J11 A320 St Peters Way (Chertsey). Congestion to before J10 (A3 Wisley interchange) with the opposite side heavy back to J13 (Staines) due to onlookers. Complex recovery is underway."
