Sulphuric acid leak shuts A34 for four hours and counting

A sulphuric acid leak has closed part of the A34 this afternoon. Emergency services shut the A34 Newcastle Road, in Brownlow, at 12.30pm this afternoon. Traffic monitoring system Inrix states: "The A34 Newcastle Road is closed in both directions.

There is slow traffic due to an accident from Childs Lane to New Road." Cheshire Police, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, and Cheshire East Council have been called to the scene. A police spokesman said: "Police received reports of an incident on the A34 Newcastle Road close to the junction with Childs Lane.

On arrival it was found that a small amount of sulphuric acid had leaked from a container on a lorry." Firefighters from Congleton and Alsager went to the scene. A fire service spokesman said: "Fire crews are working closely with partner agencies to safely contain and clean up the leak of a corrosive substance from a container on a HGV.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus have used their environment packs which allow them to safely contain and absorb hazardous materials to reduce harm to the environment."
