Tribute to John Mitchell who died in Catterick Road crash
John Mitchell, a much-loved local figure, has been named locally as the man killed in the incident, which took place on the A6136 Catterick Road near the junction with Colburn Lane at about 12.50pm last Wednesday (June 11). North Yorkshire Police confirmed the incident involved a military truck and that both the driver and passenger of that vehicle are assisting with enquiries.

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage of the incident or either vehicle before the crash. The police force confirmed yesterday (Tuesday, June 17) that an investigation remains ongoing and no further action has been taken at this time.

A regular face at the Colburn Community Sports Centre and the village hall, Mr Mitchell was known for his warmth, humour, and positive outlook, according to tributes left online. The tribute reads: "John was the heartbeat of our community, and his presence will be deeply missed."
And it adds: "What we'll miss most about John was his kind heart and genuine interest in others. He'd always ask if you were okay, and his stories of holidays and adventures would brighten up anyone's day." Numerous flowers have been left near Catterick Road and Colburn Lane, at the roundabout.

Cuthbert's Church in Colburn opened its doors on Friday (June 13) and again on Sunday (June 15) to allow mourners to light candles and sign a book of condolence.
Rev Charlotte Truman, who led prayers during the openings, said the outpouring of love was a testament to the mark Mr Mitchell had left on so many lives.
