Lorry cab bursts into flames on M5 near Bridgwater

The cab of a lorry burst into flames on the M5 this morning, Thursday, July 24. One lane of the northbound carriageway was closed at junction 24, near Bridgwater, with drivers facing long delays in the area. National Highways warned of delays of 45 minutes.

It said: "Lane 1 (of 3) is closed on the #M5 northbound between J24 (#Bridgwater) and J23 (#Taunton) due to a vehicle fire. "@AvonFireRescue remain working on scene. Delays of at least 45 minutes approaching."

Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reported the fire at 11.14am. It said: "One lane closed and queueing traffic due to vehicle fire on M5 Northbound at J24 A38 Taunton Road (Bridgwater South)." A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: "At 10.40am today two appliances and a water bowser from Taunton and Bridgwater fire stations attended a lorry cab fire on the hard shoulder near junction 24 of the M5 near Huntworth, Somerset.

"The lorry was empty but well alight on arrival and crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"The northbound motorway was briefly closed due to the smoke plume."
