A crash between a van and a skip wagon parked on the hard shoulder of the M6 has triggered a closure of the motorway. Emergency services including the North West Ambulance Service, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and Lancashire Police are at the scene between Junction 28 and Junction 27. The crash took place on the M6 northbound at 10.45am on Friday (18 July) close to Charnock Richard services.

A major fire has also taken place with smoke seen billowing from one of the vehicles[9] - understood to be the skip wagon. A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had sent crews from Leyland fire station to the scene. They remained there but had now put out a fire in one of the vehicles.

Police say a man is being treated at the scene by the ambulance service. The M6 remains closed in both directions between Junction 28 (Leyland) and Junction 27 (Standish). Delays of more than an hour are already being reported in both directions and diversion routes are in place.
