Drivers are being warned to expect a second day of major disruption following a huge eight-vehicle crash on the M60[1].

Four lorries and four cars were involved[2] in a pile-up on the motorway near Stockport at around 11.30am yesterday (July 7).

One of the lorries ploughed through the central reservation and struck multiple lampposts, another shed beer barrels onto the road and a large fuel spillage has needed to be cleared up.

Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported after the smash, Greater Manchester Police[3] said yesterday.

The motorway remains closed this morning (Tuesday) as urgent repair works take place.

Motorists are facing queues approaching the closure in both directions, while other surrounding roads around Stockport are seeing congestion.

And the disruption looks set to last for a while longer yet - with National Highways saying work will continue on the motorway 'throughout the day', with a diversion in place.

A National Highways North West spokesperson wrote on X: "The M60 in Greater Manchester remains closed both ways J25-J1 near Stockport[6] following an earlier collision, emergency barrier and bridge parapet repairs.

"Contractors will be working throughout the day to complete the repairs to reopen the road."

Police, firefighters, paramedics and traffic officers were all in attendance yesterday.

Nine people were checked over at the scene, with three taken to Stepping Hill Hospital for minor injuries, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service confirmed.
