Motorway shut due to crash involving 3 HGV'S and 3 vehicles - LIVE UPDATES[3]

One of the other heavy goods vehicles has shed its load of beer barrels in to the road.

Additionally there are several ruptured fuel tanks from the collision which have resulted in a large amount of diesel across the carriageway in both directions. The crash[4] has resulted in substantial spillages, debris and infrastructure damage. Greater Manchester Police, Manchester Fire and Rescue, North West Ambulance Service, National Highways Traffic Officers and maintenance contractors were called to the crash scene.

A spokesperson from National Highways said earlier today: "Motorists are being advised to avoid the M60 near Stockport with the motorway closed in both directions due a multi-vehicle collision. "The motorway is closed clockwise between Junction 26 (A560) and 27 (Stockport) and anti-clockwise between Junction 27 and Junction 25 (Bredbury) following the collision which happened at 11.27am. "The incident involves three heavy goods vehicles (HGVs), two cars and a van.

One HGV has crossed through the central reservation and another has 'jack-knifed'. One lorry has also shed its load. "Significant damage has been caused to the central barrier and several lamp columns have been knocked over.

There is a substantial spillage of diesel. "The road is likely to remain closed in both directions for a substantial period with motorists advised to allow more time for their journeys and plan alternative routes if possible." A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 11.30am today (Monday 7 July), three fire engines from Offerton, Whitehill and Hyde fire stations and the enhanced rescue unit from Leigh fire station attended a crash involving three HGVs and three cars on the M60 between junctions 27 and 26 spanning both clockwise and anticlockwise carriageways.

"Crews arrived quickly to make the three cars safe. Three of the nine casualties involved were transferred to Stepping Hill Hospital for minor injuries. Firefighters were in attendance for roughly three hours."
