Man to appear in court charged over death of a pedestrian in Gateshead
Police received a report of the incident involving the pedestrian and a car near to an Aldi store in the Wrekenton area of Gateshead, shortly before 4.10pm on December 18, 2023. It was reported that a car was driving away from Wrekenton when it struck a female pedestrian on Easedale Gardens. Emergency services attended the scene and found the woman, aged 82, had suffered serious, life-threatening injuries.
She was taken to hospital for treatment, but died a few days later. (Image: Northumbria Police) Immediately after the collision, the driver involved was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. Following what was described as a "long and complex investigation" by Northumbria Police's Roads Policing Unit, a Gateshead man was charged on Tuesday (July 1) with causing death by careless driving, causing death whilst uninsured, and causing death whilst having no licence.
Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police, said: "First and foremost, our thoughts remain with the victim's family and loved ones following their tragic loss. "We will continue to support them and offer any help we can at every stage of the investigation." Sgt Roberts said: "Following an extensive investigation by our Roads Policing Unit, a man has been charged in connection with the death of the woman who was sadly involved.
"We're committed to making our roads in the region a safer place for us all and we will continue to investigate and put suspects before the courts - no matter how much time has passed." Following the death of the pedestrian in hospital the force confirmed her identity as Jean Hindmarch, a "well respected" local woman who was described as "selfless" and with, "a heart of gold".
A 57-year-old man from the Deckham area of Gateshead will appear before South Tyneside magistrates faced with the charges mentioned above, on July 31.
