Drivers are being warned that more advanced speed cameras are being rolled out on UK roads.

While some motorists might think they know how speed cameras work and when they will and won't be caught, they may need to think again.

Speed camera technology is becoming more advanced, allowing them to catch more drivers and make it harder for offenders to get away with it.

New 'bi-directional digital cameras' are gradually being rolled out.

They were first installed in Devon and Cornwall two years ago, with a view to extending them more widely.

As their name suggests, they can see in more than one direction allowing them to monitor traffic on both sides of the road from longer distances.

And this could catch drivers out.

The fact they are digital also means they don't have to rely on road markings.

This may make it less obvious to motorists that they are there, so looking out for signage will become even more important.
