New speed camera to be switched on in busy Glasgow area next week

The new fixed camera will begin enforcing on Barrhead [1] Road in the Southside [2] near Silverburn [3]. Police Scotland [4] said the camera has been introduced on the westbound carriageway of the road to help reduce injury collisions in the area. According to the force, there have been 10 injury collisions on the road's westbound carriageway over a four-year period, which includes a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in 2020.

A force spokesperson said: "Speeding continues to be an issue on the westbound carriageway, with 50% of vehicles travelling above the 40mph speed limit. "The westbound carriage incorporates a footpath and cycle path. "By continuing to travel above the speed limit, drivers are reducing their reaction times and endangering all road users on this route.

"[[Police Scotland]] Safety Cameras, in discussion with Glasgow City Council [7], made the decision to introduce the enforcement technology to influence drivers to remain within the speed limits or face three points on their licence and a GBP100 fine." Cllr Angus Millar, City Convener for Transport and Climate, added: "I greatly welcome the introduction of new safety cameras as part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety across Glasgow. "By encouraging more considerate driving habits, we can create a much safer environment for all road users.

"Speeding is a major contributor to collisions, and these measures will help to reduce road casualties, particularly those most at risk, such as pedestrians and cyclists.

"I would urge all drivers to respect speed limits, obey traffic signals, stay alert to signage, and drive with care.

"Together, we can make Glasgow's roads safer for everyone."
