North Yorkshire’s first fixed speed camera ‘deliberately damaged’ on day one

The camera, which was recently installed on the A64 Sherburn High Street near Malton, was due to be operating from today (July 1) as part of a three-month trial.  But this morning, at around 2.20am, vandals damaged the lamppost holding up the camera, leaving an electricity cable exposed.  Pictures from the scene show the bent lamppost lying almost horizontal.

North Yorkshire Police said it believes the damage was deliberate rather than accidental, and has now launched an investigation.  The new cameraThe new camera (Image: Police) Work is now ongoing to reinstall the camera at an alternative site in the area of Sherburn.

A spokesperson said: "It is disappointing to see that something intended to help keep the village safe and protect members of the public has been targeted by vandals." As reported, the camera was installed as a test to see if it helps slow down motorists and reduces the number of serious and fatal collisions on the route. The camera was planned to be in use 24/7 for three months to enforce the 30mph speed limit on the road with a view to making the village safer for the local community and other motorists.

Historically, the force have used mobile cameras to enforce speed limits as well as other motoring offences - but the trial is not being done with a view to replace mobile vans.  Anyone who has any information about those responsible including anyone who witnessed it or has footage from a dashcam or doorbell camera is asked to get in touch.
