Speeding pensioner caught at 87mph handed driving ban

Pensioner Julie Varney was clocked driving at 87mph on the M27 by an automatic camera device. The 70-year-old was driving on the M27 eastbound between junctions nine and 10 - a stretch of carriageway between Park Gate and Fareham[1]. She was 17mph over the 70mph speed limit in force at the time of the offence on May 11, 2024.

Varney, of Walnut Close, Chandler's Ford, pleaded guilty to a single charge of speeding by exceeding a 70mph motorway limit. She appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court on July 24 to be sentenced. READ MORE: Drink driver who fled crash appears in court - In the Dock[2]

Varney was given a 28-day driving ban and three points on her licence. The court heard the disqualification was reduced because her "son has a mental disability and relies on his mother for transport to college." She was also ordered to pay prosecution costs of GBP130 and a GBP61 surcharge.

This must be paid in full by August 21.
