Three arrested amid Cumbria dangerous driving clampdown
This campaign under Operation Spotlight is an initiative focused on removing unfit drivers from the roads. The first incident occurred after midday on Sunday, July 6, when police received a report of a car being driven erratically on the M6 near Burton-in-Kendal. Officers traced the vehicle to Carlisle and stopped it at around 1:24pm.
The driver, a 35-year-old man from the Glasgow area, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. He has since been released under investigation while further tests are carried out. Later, also on July 6, at approximately 6pm, police were called to a report of a suspected drink-driver in Carlisle.
A van was stopped shortly after, at 6:12pm, and the 21-year-old driver, who is of no fixed address, was arrested on suspicion of drug driving. He has also been released under investigation pending the results of further testing. In a third incident on the morning of July 6, officers stopped a vehicle seen heading towards Cumwhinton at around 9am.
The 37-year-old driver, from Scotland, reportedly failed a roadside drugs test and was arrested on suspicion of drug driving. He was also released under investigation. A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said: "Our officers are continuing to target dangerous driving under Operation Spotlight.
"Driving while unfit through drink or drugs puts everyone on the road at serious risk.
"We will continue to take action against those suspected of this type of offence."
All three individuals remain under investigation and no charges have been brought at this stage.
