Twinsted crash: Driver admits killing father on A131
The defendant admitted he was driving a Mercedes Sprinter van dangerously on the A131 on February 3, just before 10.40am, and causing the death of the 44-year-old father. Emergency services rushed to the incident to aid Mr Rayner, from Wickford, who was riding his motorcycle, but despite best efforts, he died at the scene. Appearing before Chelmsford Crown Court, Dohmatob denied a second charge of possession of cannabis in Braintree on the same date.
Judge Mary Loram KC pressed for an early sentencing date following the guilty plea on Thursday. She described Mr Rayner's death as a "tragic loss of life". She said: "The defendant's record of driving is appalling.
It is difficult to see what a pre sentence report can add." The court was told Dohmatob was "approaching the matter with his eyes wide open." As the defendant, of Rossington Close, Enfield, is likely to face a prison sentence, he asked the court to have as much time as possible with his family.
The court heard Dohmatob has two children, aged six and 11, and he wanted time to spend with them before he was sentenced. Judge Loram KC said she was sympathetic to the request, but prioritised the case being resolved in favour of the victim's family. She said: "I understand it, however, look at it this way.
I would have been open to remanding him in custody. "What I will do is extend his bail; he is fortunate I'm not revoking it." Dohmatob will be before the court again next Monday to be sentenced.
Mr Rayner's family, who were present in court, had released a tribute to him shortly after his passing. They said: "Andy was dearly loved by Rachel, his fiancee, and was a loving father, brother and son. "His warmth and kindness touched the lives of all who knew him.
"Andy, who truly loved his motorcycles, was a big part of the Essex Biker Meet Up Group, and his presence will be deeply missed.
"All the family members and friends will miss Andy very much."
