Two injured after lorry bursts into flames following crash

Two people have been taken to hospital after a lorry crashed into a broken down car and burst into flames on the A303 this morning, Monday, July 21. Emergency services were called to the scene just before 10.30am after a lorry crashed into a car and then careered off the road and down a 10ft grass verge. Two people, including the lorry driver, a man in his 50s, were taken to hospital by land ambulance.

It is not thought that either person suffered serious injuries in the crash. Wiltshire Police has said no arrests have been made. Follow our live blog here for the latest updates.[1] A diversion route is currently in place for drivers traveling westbound.

National Highways has said drivers should follow the solid square diversion:

  • Exit the A303 westbound and follow the A350 to Shaftesbury
  • Continue along the A350 passing through East Knoyle and Sedgehill.
  • At the Ivy Cross roundabout take the B3081 (third exit).
  • Follow the B30181 passing through Gillingham, Wyke and Stock.
  • Rejoin the A303 westbound

National Highways added that the recovery of the lorry will be prolonged as it ended up 10ft down a grass verge. A number of trees will need to be removed before it can be recovered. Wiltshire Police said: "We responded to reports of a lorry on fire on the westbound carriageway of the A303 near Mere just before 10.30am this morning (21/07) following a collision with a broken-down vehicle.

"Two people including the driver of the lorry, a man in his 50s, were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries. No arrests have been made." A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: "We were called at 10:33hrs on Monday 21 July to a road traffic collision near Mere.

We sent two double-crewed land ambulances, and a tactical commander to the scene.

"We conveyed one patient by land ambulance to Yeovil District Hospital and another by land ambulance to Salisbury District Hospital."
