A465 Heads of the Valleys Road horse crash ‘gruesome’

28-year-old Harry Mitchell from Abertillery was travelling along the A465 to Brynmawr[1] with his partner when he witnessed a road traffic collision involving four stampeding horses[2]. "We saw four horses run up on the right-hand side and we had to break pretty quickly because the lorry right in front of us was avoiding horses."

Harry and his partner have been left feeling traumatised by the experience. He told the Argus: "It was really gruesome. We felt like s**t and we were worried about the other horses - everyone was just going around the horse."

On August 11, two horses died at the scene of a road traffic collision[3] during which drivers were hospitalised. Harry said more needs to be done to ensure something like this doesn't happen again.

"There's not enough protection for them and obviously it's easy for them to escape. Because there's not enough lights on that road so you can't see anything until it's in front of you." A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on A465, heading towards Brynmawr, at around 10.10pm on Thursday 28 August.

"The collision involved a car and horse.

No injuries were reported.

One horse died at the scene."
