Drug arrest after sewage lorry crash on A4440 in Worcester

A 55-year-old man remains in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of drug driving on the A4440 Whittington Road this afternoon (August 21). Nobody was injured during the crash that happened at around 2pm on the roundabout connecting to County Hall. Four fire engines were sent to the scene, however, the man had managed to leave the HGV before their arrival.

A Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Four crews - two from Worcester and one each from Droitwich and Evesham Fire Stations - and the environmental protection unit from Tenbury Wells were called at 1.54pm on August 21 to an RTV involving a large vehicle on the A4440 Nunnery Way, Worcester. "The incident involved an HGV tanker which was made safe and drained. "One male casualty was given a precautionary check by the ambulance service"

Police officers at the scene confirmed that there had been no injuries and that the tanker was filled with greywater. Speaking this evening (August 21), a West Mercia Police spokesperson said: "Police were called to the A4440 Whittington Road at around 1.50pm today to a an overturned sewage lorry. "A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving in connection with the incident and is currently in custody.

"There have been no injuries reported. The road closures are being managed by the Highways Agency."

Alongside four fire engines, an unmarked and marked police car also attended.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to reports of an RTC at the junction of Nunnery Way and the A4440 in Worcester at 1.50pm. "An ambulance and paramedic officer were sent to the scene where, on arrival, crews found a lorry on its side. "The driver, a man, was assessed by ambulance staff but was not injured and so was given self-care advice and discharged at the scene."

Commenting on social media, Haydon Wadley said: "It happened right in front of me. The driver mobilised himself out of the vehicle, and I gave him a quick check. The lorry was carrying septic waste.

He is ok but just shaken."
