Investigation into crash that killed man on mobility scooter continues two months on

Investigations into a crash that killed a pensioner on a mobility scooter continue two months on, police said.

John Robert Mitchell, from Catterick Garrison, was riding his scooter on the A6136 Catterick Road on June 11, when it collided by a military truck.

Police, paramedics, and the air ambulance, were called to the road near the junction with Colburn Lane Mr Mitchell died en-route to hospital by air. Advertisement Advertisement

On Monday (August 11), North Yorkshire Police confirmed their investigation into Mr Mitchell's death "remains ongoing".

An inquest was opened into his death last month when Senior Coroner for York and North Yorkshire, Jonathan Heath, recorded a provisional cause of death of lower neck injuries.

The inquest was adjourned pending further police investigation.

They said: "John Mitchell: much loved husband, brother, uncle and godfather, will be sadly missed."

As previously reported, the road remained closed for more than six hours after the incident.

The driver and passenger in the military truck, both men, are continuing to assist North Yorkshire Police with its enquiries, the force said.

Floral tributes were left at the roadside near the scene, where Mr Mitchell was described as a "pillar of the community".

One tribute read: "Even at 70, he was more consistent than most at the gym."

Another added: "His love for life was contagious, and his kindness touched so many."
