Live Leicestershire A5 updates as bashed bridge struck again
A major Leicestershire[1] road has been closed following a crash at a notorious bashed bridge. Leicestershire Police[2] said the A5 Watling Street in Hinckley is shut in both directions between Dodwells Roundabout and Logix Road. The closure, which came into force earlier this morning (Thursday, August 7) is affecting traffic heading in and out of Hinckley[3]. Officers have urged drivers to avoid the area and find alternative routes while emergency services deal with the incident.
The bridge has become infamous for frequent collisions in recent years, with National Highways revealing it was struck 88 times between 2017 and 2022. Each strike reportedly costs the economy up to GBP20 million[4], while causing severe disruption to both rail and road users. We are working to get further details on the nature of the crash and any injuries.
