Live: M5 and A38 traffic chaos amid Friday getaway

Motorists face major delays on the M5 and A38 today, Friday, August 1. Traffic on the M5 has been reported to be at a "standstill" as thousands take to the roads during the summer holidays. One person has told DevonLive: "Traffic has ground to an almost halt northbound near Exeter".

Another driver has said: "M5 northbound between Exeter and Cullompton (junction 29 to 28) at a standstill." Another person said: "Emergency services in attendance and M5 northbound between Bridgwater and Taunton at a standstill". National Highways reports heavy traffic northbound at junction 28, junction 25 near Taunton, and multiple patches of extremely heavy traffic on the motorway to South Gloucestershire.

There are reports of a "high volumes" of traffic at Sandygate Roundabout. Drivers have been told: "Sandygate Rbt and the surrounding area is experiencing large volumes of traffic. Please expect delays or find an alternative route."

A lorry has also crashed into the central reservation at junction 29 on the M5. Roads and traffic monitoring site, Inrix, reports: "All traffic being temporarily held and stationary traffic due to accident, a lorry colliding with the central reservation involved on M5 in both directions from J29 A30 Honiton Road (Exeter / Honiton) to J28 A373 Honiton Road (Cullompton / Service Area). "Traffic has stopped northbound around 11:40 for an accident, traffic also held on the southbound side too."
