New 'smart' speed cameras on Stoke-on-Trent's busiest roads have caught 1,053 drivers so far this year. The advanced technology, which use artificial intelligence to detect vehicles breaking the limit, were installed in hotspots areas in the city and in Stafford at the end of 2023.

Now figures show they have snapped thousands of drivers since being switched on. A total of 3,354 were caught by three cameras in Stoke-on-Trent and a further 540 in Stafford from the start of 2024.

This works out at about 49 every week on average.

The cameras are an example of the new type of technology becoming available to Staffordshire Police, as traffic officers seek to make roads safer and convince drivers to slow down.

The camera on the A34 Newcastle Road in Trent Vale has been busiest this year, capturing 861 speeding vehicles.

Latest speeding data was released by Staffordshire Police following a freedom of information request by BirminghamLive.[1][2]

The roads were chosen following concerns over speeding, and officers have not ruled out targeting more roads in the future.

The high-tech cameras use a radar device to accurately measure the speed of each vehicle that passes.

It means they no longer have to rely on cars going over road markings.

High-quality images of any vehicles exceeding the speed limit are then automatically sent to the enforcement officers.

Ahead of the rollout, Inspector Mark Joynson, of the force's Roads Policing Unit, said: "The installation of the new technology will make it easier to check speeds across Staffordshire and we hope they will provide a visual reminder of the work we do every day to keep all road users as safe as possible."
