A motorcyclist has suffered what are believed to be serious injuries after a crash with a lorry on the M5 in Gloucestershire on Saturday (August 9).

A collision saw the southbound carriageway shut at junction 11 for the A40 Golden Valley Bypass, near Gloucester and Cheltenham.

The northbound carriageway was also temporarily brought to a standstill for the air ambulance to land.[1]

Photographs showed 'trapped' traffic at a standstill with some people getting out of their cars after being stationary for around 90 minutes.

Both carriageways have since reopened following the collision at around 3.25pm.

The closures caused severe delays for motorists heading in both directions on the motorway.

As traffic avoided the closure, there was slow-moving traffic on the A46 Shurdington Road and on the A417 at Crickley Hill.

Motorists complained of long delays throughout the afternoon and after the motorway reopened.

Issuing an update on the crash, Gloucestershire police said: "A man who had been riding a motorcycle has been taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with suspected serious injuries."

Earlier, National Highways said of the closure: "This is due to a serious collision involving a lorry and motorcycle on the southbound M5."
