Motorists are warned to avoid a stretch of the M6 motorway[1] on Saturday morning as it's expected to be shut for "most of the morning" after a lorry overturned. Emergency services[2] were called to the northbound carriageway[3] in North Staffordshire on Friday (August 8) following a lorry crash.

National Highways[4] said recovery of the lorry, which has been pictured on its side after the incident, is still ongoing. Emergency services are also dealing with a diesel spillage, which spilt "all over the carriageway" during the crash.

The closure is in place between Junction 14 and Junction 15, StokeonTrentLive[5] reports. Nobody has been injured, Staffordshire Police has confirmed.

National Highways reported the northbound closure at around 10.30pm on Friday.

In a post on X it said "all emergency services" had been sent to what they described as a "serious collision involving an overturned lorry" during the night and police turned around traffic caught up in the closure.

In its latest update National Highways said works to recovery the truck was ongoing. Earlier this morning and two lanes on the southbound[6] also had to be shut. A post on X added: "The road is expected to remain closed throughout the morning."

This morning (August 9) traffic monitoring system Inrix reported that a lane is also shut on the southbound carriageway.

An image shared by National Highways shows recovery trucks and what appears to be a type of crane used to recover the truck.

Officials are working to clean up an diesel spill, which has involved a level of resurfacing work being carried out today.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police's road crime team said only the lorry was involved in the collision with diesel subsequently being spilled "all over the carriageway."
