Scrap metal man died from head injuries in County Durham crash, inquest hears

A man who died in a crash in County Durham last month has been named for the first time.

Christopher Mordue, 38, died at the scene of a collision on the A689 at Rushyford, in County Durham, on June 30.

An inquest looking into the circumstances surrounding his death was opened on Thursday, August 7, and heard he died from head injuries.

Crook Coroner's Court heard the Hetton-le-Hole resident, who worked as a scrap metal merchant, was travelling along the road at 11.15am when he collided with a HGV driving in the opposite direction. Advertisement Advertisement

Coroners' officer Carol Prested told the inquest: "I understand the circumstances to be that the vehicle the deceased was driving collided with a heavy goods vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

"On July 8, 2025, Dr Louise Mulcahy conducted a post-mortem examination at Newcastle Freeman Hospital and gave the cause of death as head injuries.

"The body of the deceased was identified on July 3 2025."

Following Mr Mordue's death, floral tributes were left at the scene.

One card placed at the crash site reads: "Christopher, You will stay alive in my heart forever.

I need you to rest in peace now. I will love you always and never ever forget you. All my love forever."

At the time of his death, a Durham Police spokesperson said: "A man has sadly died following a serious collision on the A689 at Rushyford on Monday morning.

"The man, in his 30s was sadly pronounced dead the scene.

Two other people were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"His family have been notified are being supported by specialist officers.

"The road was closed in both directions for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene."
