Driver fled scene after van smashed into Newcastle deli, with collision ‘unexplained’

A van driver who crashed into a Newcastle deli fled the scene in an "unexplained" collision. Police were called to Eaton Deli on Condercum Road, Benwell, late on Saturday night after reports that a van had crashed into the food business.

Photographs showed a police cordon in the early hours of Sunday morning. Further pictures taken by ChronicleLive on Tuesday showed that the deli had been fenced off and that the front windows and door had been removed.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police[1] said: "Shortly after 11pm on Saturday, August 30, we received a report of a one vehicle collision in the Benwell Area of Newcastle.

It was reported that a grey Vauxhall van had collided with a premises on Condercum Road.

"The driver of the vehicle is believed to have left the scene prior to emergency service arrival. The circumstances surrounding the collision are unexplained.
