HGV driver in hospital after ‘serious’ lorry crash closes A1(M) near Darlington
A HGV driver has been taken to hospital following a serious crash on the A1(M) near Darlington.
Police and paramedics were called to the southbound side of the major route on Wednesday (September 10) following a one-vehicle crash around 3pm.
The road was closed between junction 60 and 59, near Newton Aycliffe, sparking lengthy delays with average speeds of 5mph for traffic.
One eyewitness, who had been sat in the traffic for more than an hour as of 4.30pm, reported seeing "ten emergency service vehicles and counting" at the scene. Advertisement Advertisement

Durham Police has confirmed that the driver of the lorry has been taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital. Their condition remains unknown.

At the time of publication, the road remained closed.
A police spokesperson said: "Police were called at 3.10pm today (September 10) following a one-vehicle collision on the A1(M).
"The incident, which involved a HGV, took place on the southbound carriageway between the Bradbury and Newton Aycliffe junctions.
"The driver of the HGV has been taken to hospital for treatment."

A NEAS spokesperson added: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 southbound near Newton Aycliffe today (10 September) at 3.06pm.
"We dispatched two ambulance crews, one critical care paramedic and a clinical team leader to the incident.
One patient was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital."
