Man fined for driving at 46mph on the M4

Matthew Strickland, of Franklyns in Plymouth, was travelling towards Wiltshire on the M4 eastbound between junctions 20 and 19, near Bristol, and the M5 between junctions 15 and 17, on December 20 last year. At the time, variable speed limits prohibiting motorists from exceeding 40mph were in place on the stretch of motorway, which is used by many commuters to and from Wiltshire. The 42-year-old was caught exceeding this variable speed limit by an automatic camera device, which clocked him driving at 46mph.

He appeared at Bath Law Courts on Thursday, September 4, where he pleaded guilty to the offence.

Strickland was fined GBP230 and ordered to pay GBP110 in costs and a GBP92 surcharge.

He was not banned from driving after mitigating circumstances were raised in court.

As previously reported by this paper, Strickland is among multiple drivers to have been snared breaking variable speed limits on the M4 recently, including some motorists from Swindon and Wiltshire.
