Man killed after crashing car into tree named as Metropolitan Police officer as tributes pour in
A man who was killed after crashing his car into a tree in Essex[1] has been named as a Metropolitan Police[2] officer.
Police Constable Louie Day died while driving on the A414, between Chelmsford and Ongar, in the early hours of Friday, September 5.
The 23-year-old worked for the Met as a response officer in Barking and Dagenham[3], east London, and was described as a "popular" colleague.
Paying tribute, his family said in a statement: "A beautiful soul has left this world and will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Essex Police said its staff were "working to give them the answers they need about what led up to his death".
PC Day joined Scotland Yard[4]'s East Area Command at the start of 2025, having spent two years as a community support officer.
He was driving his Vauxhall Corsa[5] when it left the road and struck a tree shortly before 3.30am. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved.

Detectives have sent an appeal to members of the public for any CCTV or dashcam footage that could help their investigation.
Chief Superintendent Stuart Bell, who led the East Area Command, said: "Louie was popular amongst his colleagues, who are devastated to hear of his passing.

"We continue to support Essex Police with their investigation and thank them for the support they are providing to Louie's family at this difficult time."
Anyone with information can make a report via the Essex Police website quoting incident number 109 of September 5.
