Speed cameras in operation on Glasgow’s M8 from today

Starting today (September 8), Amey will carry out a bridge refurbishment project, including rail and slip road upgrades[1], on the busy road at Junction 26 (Hillington Interchange). The 'essential works', valued at GBP10 million, will be completed over five phases from September 2025 until Spring 2026.

To coincide with the works beginning on September 8, we've compiled everything you need to know about the project:

When will the works take place? Amey will carry out the major bridge refurbishment project between September this year and Spring 2026.

What will the works include? The work will include significant repairs and upgrades to four key bridge structures, addressing vehicle parapets, structure waterproofing, safety barriers, and carriageway surfacing. When will Phase One of the works take place?

Phase One of the works will take place from Monday, September 8, until Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

Will there be restrictions in place during Phase One? Phase One of the works will be conducted under a 2+2 contraflow system on the M8 mainline carriageway at Junction 26, which will involve closing lanes two and three of the eastbound carriageway and narrowing running lanes to facilitate.  In addition, a total closure of the Junction 26 eastbound on-slip will be in place during Phase One.

Will there be a diversion in place during the closure of the Junction 26 eastbound on-slip?  During the closure of the eastbound on-slip at Junction 26, motorists will be diverted. Traffic will be diverted as follows:

North of Hillington Interchange for vehicles in the Renfrew[4]/Braehead Area:

  • Overnight traffic (7pm to 6am) wishing to use the Junction 26 on-slip road will be directed to follow Hillington Interchange to Renfrew Road, Shieldhall Road, and Helen Street to join the M8 eastbound at the Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange) on-slip road.

South of Hillington Interchange for vehicles in the Hillington Industrial Estate area:

  • All traffic wishing to use Junction 26 from south of the Interchange will be directed to follow Hillington Road to Paisley Road West, Helen Street, and then join the M8 eastbound via Junction 24 (Helen Street Interchange) on-slip road.

Will there be any other restrictions in place on the road during the major project? During the project, a 40mph speed limit will be in place on the busy motorway. Additionally, average speed cameras will be in operation to ensure the safety of the workforce and the travelling public, as 24/7 construction work will take place.

Meanwhile, Amey said overnight closures will be required for traffic management installation and changes as the project progresses; these will be communicated in advance on swtrunkroads.scot

What are average speed cameras?  Average Speed Camera systems use linked Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to monitor the average speed of traffic over a section of road, or a network of roads, according to Police Scotland Safety Cameras[6]. (Image: Newsquest) A description on the Police Scotland[7] Safety Cameras website regarding average speed cameras reads: "Average Speed Camera Systems use linked Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to monitor the average speed of traffic over a section of road, or network of roads.

"Cameras can be installed in front and rear-facing orientations, and offending vehicles can be recorded between multiple locations and multiple lanes within the system. "These cameras are used at permanent locations to control speeds on routes with a collision history and on a temporary basis at major roadworks to manage speeds through areas where narrow lanes and contraflows can affect safety." When will the cameras be switched on?

Amey said the new average speed cameras on the motorway will be active from 6am on Monday, September 8.

Where is Junction 26 on the M8 motorway?

Junction 26 is located in the Hillington area of Glasgow, near Braehead Shopping Centre[8] in Renfrew[9].
