Tens of thousands busted by Cornwall’s top-earning speed cameras

The spots where more speeders have been caught by cameras than anywhere else in Cornwall have been revealed. New data shows that the stretch of Cornish road where the most people were busted saw the third highest number of drivers caught out in all of Devon and Cornwall. Legal Expert gathered information from Devon and Cornwall Police[1] showing that Cornish roads account for six of the 15 'worst' in the region.

It also reveals that four of the five highest speeds recorded by speed cameras were at the top spot for fines - Roseworthy Dip on the A30. Between April 2024 and March this year, the force handed out a massive 215,047 NIPs (Notices of Intended Prosecution). Speeding drivers get three points added to their license as a minimum.

Reaching 12 points within three years will disqualify them from driving. The fixed penalty for speeding is GBP100. Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed that it sent 14,240 FPNs (fixed penalty notices) for speeding to offenders.

The A30[2] Roseworthy Dip near Camborne[3] was Cornwall's speeding bust hot spot, and the third-highest for speeding offences in the two counties. Cameras there spotted 8,013 speeding offences in just a year, which works out at around 22 per day on average. Longdowns speed cameras on the A394 between Penryn[4] and Helston[5] caught 7,267 offences, putting it fifth in the Devon[6] and Cornwall[7] list.

Also featured are St Ann's Chapel and the westbound road at Saltash Tunnel, both in eastern Cornwall. Truro[8] 's Tregolls Road appears twice, with 7,122 offences on Tregolls Road West and 4,071 on Tregolls Road East. Combined, they top Roseworthy with a total of 11,193.

In 2019, a Freedom of Information Act (FoI) request to Devon and Cornwall Police[9] revealed that one of the 'most activated camera' was on the A30[10] at Roseworthy Dip (East), Camborne[11], was activated 8,032 times over a three-year period between 2016 and 2018. It was the the third most activated speed camera across the force area at the time. Cornwall was also where the fastest driver[12] to be caught was nailed - at 150mph.
