Elderly man dies in A66 crash near Bowes as van driver airlifted to hospital

A man has tragically lost his life following a three-vehicle crash involving a car, a van and a HGV on the A66[1]. The incident occurred shortly after 10.30am on Tuesday, September 30, near Bowes, in County Durham Despite the efforts of emergency services, the 86-year-old driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, Durham Constabulary has confirmed.

His family have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers. The van driver was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital[2] in Middlesbrough[3] with serious injuries, while the HGV driver was taken to Darlington[4] Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, reports Chronicle Live[5]. A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service stated: "We received a call at 10.33am on Tuesday 30 September to reports of a road traffic incident on the A66 in Bowes, Barnard Castle.

We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, a duty officer, a rapid response paramedic, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by air. "Two patients were transported to hospital for further treatment. One patient was transported by air to James Cook University Hospital, and another was transported by road to Darlington Memorial Hospital."
