Long delays after HGV crashes into bridge on M6 in Cumbria
Police were called after an HGV crashed into a bridge in between Junction 44 and 45 of the M6 just before 7am on Thursday morning. The M6 Northbound was closed and long delays were seen back on the M6 to beyond Junction 43 and on the diversion route. Over the border, the A74(M) Southbound was closed with from Junction 22 for Gretna Green.
Police and the emergency services were at the scene with cars reportedly stuck on the motorway for more than three hours without moving. In a statement, Cumbria Police described the incident as 'serious' and images show debris strewn across the road. A spokesperson for Cumbria Police said at the time: "Police and emergency services are currently in attendance on the M6 due to a serious road traffic collision involving a HGV which occurred just prior to J45 Northbound.
"There is a closure in place between J44 -J45 Northbound on M6 and J22 (A74 M) - J45 Southbound (M6). "Motorists are advised to take alternative routes this morning as the road may be closed for some time. "The report came in at 6:42am."
