M60 traffic LIVE: Rush hour chaos as crash causes massive queues on two motorways

Two motorways[1] have been plunged into chaos at the height of rush hour after two seperate crashes[2] caused sections of the M60 to close. The first incident is said to have taken place near Denton Island, causing delays[3] on the M60 clockwise this morning, according to Inrix. The second crash happened near Swinton.

Delays are being reported on the M60 anticlockwise, trailing back to junction 19 of the M62 westbound at Heywood. The M61 southbound approaching the Swinton Interchange is also facing queues, as well as the M60 clockwise between junctions 23 at Ashton and 25 at Brinnington.

Earlier lorry fire sparked closure in same area

A lorry fire on Tuesday evening sparked closures in the same section of the M60 - at Junction 24 (Denton Island), where it meets the M67.

Police and firefighters raced to the scene to tackle the blaze, which caused major delays on the motorway with drivers urged to re-route.

Lanes near Denton re-open - but queues remain

All lanes have now re-opened near Denton Island. The vehicles involved in the collision have been moved from the scene. Traffic remain in the area, going as far back as junction 23 at Ashton.

Those trying to head to work via the M60 are now facing further delays following a second crash near Swinton.

According to Inrix, the anticlockwise carriageway is "partially blocked" following an "accident" - with queues near junction 15 for the M61 Swinton Interchange.

A seperate incident on the M62 has left drivers heading towards Manchester from West Yorkshire stranded in more traffic. It comes after traffic briefly stopped on the motorway following an earlier collision. Queues are westbound between junctions 23 at Huddersfield and 22 at Saddleworth.
