Man charged after lorry overturns on A350 Chippenham

The incident, which took place on Friday, October 17, closed one of Wiltshire's busiest roads as the lorry, believed to have been carrying woodchips, spilled its load on Malmesbury Roundabout. The A350 in Chippenham was shut off shortly after 2am, and emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a driver trapped in the overturned lorry. A man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of drink and drug driving.

The aftermath of the crash(Image: Trevor Porter) Wiltshire Police has now confirmed that Michael Maddick, of Portmead in Swansea, has now been charged with drug driving. It's understood that no charge has been made in relation to drink driving.

The 44-year-old Swansea man has now been released on bail and is due to appear at Swindon Magistrate's Court on November 4, 2025. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "We've charged a man after a lorry overturned on the A350 in Chippenham in the early hours of this morning. "Michael Maddick, 44, of Portmead, Swansea, has been charged with driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs.

He has been released on bail." The A350 remained closed for much of Friday, as a complex recovery process got underway. Officers have urged any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson for the force added: "Anyone with information should call 101 and quote log 21 of today (October 17)."
