Men admit roles in fatal Nelson Easter Sunday crash
Rizwan Mehdi, 36, of Commercial Street, Brierfield, appeared at Burnley Crown Court on Wednesday (October 15), where he pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. Kashif Mehdi, 42, of Montcliffe Crescent, Manchester, admitted perverting the course of justice and fraud by false representation. The court heard that the perverting the course of justice charge related to a false report made to police claiming that the BMW M5 involved in the crash had been stolen.
The fraud charge related to a false report made to Tradex Insurance in connection with the same claim. The incident happened shortly after 8.30pm on Sunday, March 31 last year, on Colne Road, Nelson. The men entered their pleas at Burnley Crown Court(Image: Anthony Moss)
Alan Lee, 57, was standing at a bus stop when he was struck by a BMW M5, which then crashed into a wall. Paramedics, who were passing the scene on their way to another job, stopped to help but were unable to save him. Following the crash, police launched an investigation and arrested three men.
Two of them, Rizwan and Kashif Mehdi, were later charged in connection with the incident.
Both men were granted bail and are due to be sentenced on January 30, 2026, at either of the Crown Court buildings in Burnley or Preston.
