Pensioner dies and another injured after A66 Bowes crash
Emergency services, including two air ambulances, were called to Bowes, near Barnard Castle, on Tuesday (September 30) following a crash just before 10.30am. [1] The incident, which involved a HGV, a van, and a car, saw the major road closed between the A66 at Scotch Corner and A67 at Bowes for 12 hours. Durham Police has now confirmed that the driver of the car, an 86-year-old man, has sadly died.
His family have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers. The driver of the van was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, with serious injuries. His current condition remains unknown.
The driver of the HGV was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
As reported, the incident sparked "standstill" traffic along the A66 as a result of the closure, with investigations continuing into the night.
