Tragedy as pensioner dies in horror A66 crash involving HGV in County Durham

A man has died following a three-vehicle collision involving a car, a van and a HGV. Emergency services were called to the A66 near Bowes, County Durham[1], shortly after 10.30am on Tuesday.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance service attended the scene. But despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the driver of the car, an 86-year-old man, was sadly died at the scene, Durham Constabulary[2] confirmed.

His family have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers.

The driver of the van was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, with serious injuries. And the driver of the HGV was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

A North East Ambulance Service[3] spokesperson said: "We received a call at 10.33am on Tuesday 30 September to reports of a road traffic incident on the A66 in Bowes, Barnard Castle. We dispatched two ambulance crews, a clinical team leader, a duty officer, a rapid response paramedic, two crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service[4] (GNAAS) who attended by air.

"Two patients were transported to hospital for further treatment.

One patient was transported by air to James Cook University Hospital, and another was transported by road to Darlington Memorial Hospital."

The road was closed for several hours between the A66 at Scotch Corner and the A67 at Bowes while collision investigators worked at the scene.
