A1 traffic RECAP: Major dual-carriageway closed after horror crash involving lorry
A major road is closed northbound following a collision[1] where a lorry overturned. "The A1 in in Lincolnshire[2] is closed northbound between the B1174 near Grantham and B6326 near Newark-on-Trent," National Highways said. National Highways said that the recovery will be "complex" and the carriageway closure could be in place for several hours as a result.

National Highways says that the plan is to open the A1 northbound but with the first lane still closed for the remaining clean up operation.
A message from the agency read: "Complex recovery continues as of 09:00, work is proving to be protracted due to its complex nature. Specialist teams are also on scene to assess the impact of a diesel spillage. "Once recovery is complete we plan to reopen the carriageway with a lane 1 closure in place.
The lane 1 will remain in place to allow further treatment of the carriageway following the diesel spillage and to assess and repair minor damage to the carriageway surface. "Currently no estimates are available for reopening as recovery continues to be protracted due to its complex nature. "If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time.

- Exit the A1 southbound at the A52/A1 Barrowby southbound junction.
- Travel west on the A52 for approximately 19 km until you reach the A46/A52 Saxondale Island.
- Turn right onto the A46 (south) and continue to the A46/A6097 Margidunum roundabout.
- Turn left (following high-loads detour through Bingham if necessary) and continue through the roundabout on the A46.
- Continue along the A46 until you reach the Farndon roundabout, then turn left onto the A46.
- Continue through the villages of East Stoke and Farndon, and head towards the A46/A617/A616 Cattle Market roundabout.
- Turn left at the roundabout, staying on the A46 towards the A1/A46 Brownhills roundabout.
- Continue straight at the A1/A46 Brownhills roundabout, heading towards the A46/A17 Newark Junction.
- Exit the A46 onto the A1 northbound at the A46/A17 Newark Junction.
Diesel spillage adds to 'complex nature' of vehicle recovery
National Highways has said that the recovery operation has been "protracted" due to the "complex nature" of the job which has also been affected by a diesel spillage. The agency states "Complex recovery continues as of 09:00, work is proving to be protracted due to its complex nature. Specialist teams are also on scene to assess the impact of a diesel spillage.
"Once recovery is complete we plan to reopen the carriageway with a lane 1 closure in place. An updated statement issued by National Highways says A1 is to remain closed for "several further hours". It reads: "The collision involving an overturned HGV was reported to National Highways at 01:01am.
Lincolnshire Police and Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene in the first instance, stopping traffic to assess the scene. "Once the situation was confirmed the road was closed at 02:24am where a complex recovery operation has continued throughout the night. "This process is still ongoing as of 07:00am but is in its final stages, the road is likely to remain closed for several further hours as we engage specialist teams to attend and assist with recovery and clear up works."
