A52 closure near Grantham: Diversion routes after ‘Army lorry’ crashes

Diversion routes have been issued by National Highways as motorists try to negotiate a hours-long A52 closure caused by an overturned lorry.[1][2] The A52[3] has been shut in both directions between the A1 (Barrowby) and the A46 (Saxondale) after the vehicle - which appears to have been travelling in an Army[4] convoy - flipped and shed its load. The closure is expected to be in place for several hours due to the complex nature of the recovery, according to National Highways.
Emergency services and National Highways traffic officers are currently on scene, the body added. This closure is causing disruption for drivers travelling from the east of Rushcliffe into Lincolnshire, and National Highways has shared the following diversion route for drivers: Eastbound diversion route not symbol-led:
- From the A52 (Saxondale Island) take the exit onto the A46 and continue north until the roundabout with the A1/A17.
- At the roundabout take the A1 southbound exit and follow A1 until the A52 at Barrowby then rejoin the A52.
Westbound diversion route not symbol-led:
- From the A52 junction with the A1 take the northbound and continue on the A1.
- Take the exit slip road at Newark and head south on the A46.
- Continue on the A46 until you rejoin the A52 at Saxondale roundabout.
Drivers have been slowed by the road closure, according to traffic monitoring service Inrix.
However, Google's traffic maps suggest the roads around the Nottinghamshire end of the A52 closure are currently coping well.
National Highways first shared news of the closure at just before 7am this morning.
Some traffic had been traffic within the closure, but was released before 8am.
