M20 closed RECAP: London commuters in huge delays after horror crash

Commuters faced long delays this morning as part of the M20 is closed following a horror crash[1] between a car and a van. The section between junction 8 at Hollingbourne and junction 9 at Ashford in Kent[2] was shut in both directions, although westbound -- into London -- has now reopened. Eastbound traffic, though, is still being held at around Hollingbourne, and the diversion will add significant time to journeys, the National Highways warns.

The M20 connects the county with the capital. The smash happened just after 12am today but the recovery operation continues, authorities said. Kent Police are assisting with the work, which the National Highways believes will still take some time.

Leave with plenty of time, National Highways says

If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey, the National Highways has warned. Alternative routes, such as the A20, will be busy in and around Harrietsham, Lenham, Charing and Pluckley throughout the morning.
