Police confirm woman has died after being hit by lorry on busy North East road

A woman has tragically lost her life after being struck by a lorry on the A66 in Middlesbrough. The emergency services were called to the eastbound A66 near Riverside Retail Park following reports of a road traffic accident.

The pedestrian, aged 49, was hit by a large goods vehicle travelling east on the carriageway.

Paramedics arrived at the scene on the A66 at 4.40pm on Thursday, November 27, but sadly, she was declared dead.

The eastbound A66 was shut for around seven hours while initial collision investigations took place at the scene. The police are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to step forward.

A representative for Cleveland Police stated: "We're appealing for witnesses and any relevant dash cam footage after a fatal collision on the A66 eastbound (towards Redcar) yesterday, Thursday, November 27.

"The incident happened just before 4.40pm as a large goods vehicle travelling on the A66 and passing Riverside Retail Park near Argos was in collision with a female pedestrian. Police and ambulance service colleagues attended however very sadly the 49-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene," reports Teesside Live [1].

"Our thoughts are with her family at this extremely difficult time.

The road remained closed until around midnight to allow initial collision enquiries to begin and we are now urging anyone who witnessed the incident and who has not yet spoken to police to get in touch.

"We would also ask anyone with relevant dash cam footage to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 227480."

Motorists were advised to steer clear of the area on Thursday evening. A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service [2] stated: "We received a call to 999 at 4.41pm on Thursday to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry at six medals roundabout, Shepherdson Way, Middlesbrough. We sent a clinical team leader, a doctor, an emergency ambulance crew and a specialist paramedic."
