Woman dies after being hit by lorry on A66 in Middlesbrough as probe into collision under way

A 49-year-old woman, who was a pedestrian, has died after being hit by a large goods vehicle on the A66

A woman has died after being hit by a lorry on the A66[1] in Middlesbrough[2]. Emergency services were called to the A66 eastbound near Riverside Retail Park to reports of a road traffic collision.

The 49-year-old pedestrian was hit by a large goods vehicle, which was travelling east on the carriageway. Paramedics were called to the A66 at 4.40pm on Thursday, November 27, but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The A66 eastbound was closed for around seven hours as initial collision inquiries were carried out at the scene.

Now, the force is appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam to come forward.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police[3] said: "We're appealing for witnesses and any relevant dash cam footage after a fatal collision on the A66 eastbound (towards Redcar[4]) yesterday, Thursday, November 27.

"The incident happened just before 4.40pm as a large goods vehicle travelling on the A66 and passing Riverside Retail Park near Argos was in collision with a female pedestrian. Police and ambulance service colleagues attended however very sadly the 49-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Our thoughts are with her family at this extremely difficult time. The road remained closed until around midnight to allow initial collision enquiries to begin and we are now urging anyone who witnessed the incident and who has not yet spoken to police to get in touch.

"We would also ask anyone with relevant dash cam footage to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 227480."

Motorists were urged to avoid the area on Thursday evening.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call to 999 at 4.41pm on Thursday to reports of a road traffic collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry at six medals roundabout, Shepherdson Way, Middlesbrough. We sent a clinical team leader, a doctor, an emergency ambulance crew and a specialist paramedic."
