A19 closed after pedestrian killed by cars

A pedestrian was killed when he was hit by two cars on the A19 near Sunderland, police have said.

The man in his 60s was walking along the southbound carriageway below the overpass for the A1893 at about 22:10 GMT on Saturday when he was struck by a white Toyota Prius and a blue Volkswagen Sharan, Northumbria Police said.

The man died at the scene and the drivers of the vehicles remained to assist police.

The road remains closed northbound between the A690 (Farringdon) and A183 (Hastings Hill), and southbound between the A1231 (South Hylton) and A690 while an investigation is carried out.

Pedestrian access along the westbound stretch of the roundabout is also closed.

Diversion routes are in place but drivers have been warned to expect delays and to re-route their journey if possible.

The reasons surrounding the crash are yet to be established and the force has asked for witnesses to come forward.
