A39 Porlock Hill was closed after crash left people trapped

A key A-road linking Somerset and Devon was closed as emergency services attempted to free two people trapped in a van. Avon and Somerset Police reported that the A39 was shut between Porlock and Lynton following a collision during "unsafe" weather conditions. The force stated that this follows a "single vehicle collision just after 1pm today" (Tuesday, December 9).

The force added: "Two people are trapped after a van partially left the road and emergency services are at the scene. "Due to high winds the road is unsafe and closures are in place." Storm Bram has been causing widespread disruption on the roads across the region today.[1] Police did not state exactly where the van had left the road.

The Porlock end of the A39, known as Porlock Hill, is notoriously steep[2] with a gradient of 25 per cent.

The road reopened by 7.45pm
