Police statement in full after pedestrian dies in crash on A19

A man has died following a serious collision on the A19 in Sunderland that has seen the road closed. Police have now appealed to members of the public who may have information on the incident to come forward. Shortly after 10.10pm on Saturday, December 20, the emergency services were called to the scene following reports of a collision on the A19 southbound below the overpass for the A1893, Northumbria Police confirmed.

The North East Ambulance Service sent two emergency ambulance crews, a doctor, and a clinical team leader.

It was reported that, for reasons yet to be established, a pedestrian was walking along the southbound carriageway when he was struck by a white Toyota Prius and a blue Volkswagen Sharan. The pedestrian, a man aged in his 60s, died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed and continue to be supported, police have said.

The drivers of the vehicles remained at the scene to assist with enquiries, and an investigation is now under way.
