A driver allegedly left an elderly pedestrian fight for life on a ventilator after he struck her while she was crossing a road in Northumberland[1]. Luke Moore was accused of hitting the woman while he was driving his Mercedes dangerously on the A193 Links Road, in Seaton Sluice[2], one evening in December 2023.

A court[3] heard that the 78-year-old victim, who was left unconscious at the side of the road, was taken to hospital, where she was put on a ventilator for a "number of days". She also suffered broken ribs and bruising to her face and eyes.

Northumbria Police[4] later issued and appeal for the driver to come forward and subsequently spoke to Moore.

The 27-year-old, of Biddlestone Crescent, in North Shields[5], appeared at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court this week to face one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

During the brief hearing, Moore spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address and to plead not guilty to the charge. Jade Houston, prosecuting, said the accident happened on the evening of December 8 2023 as the pensioner was crossing the road near the Astley Arms.

Miss Houston added: "The Crown would say that this is not suitable for summary trial. It's alleged the defendant was travelling on the A193 at Seaton Sluice when he's hit a pedestrian and made no effort to break.

"The pedestrian suffered facial bruising, broken ribs and bruising in the eyes." Miss Houston said the pensioner was also left unconscious at the side of the road.

Graham Crouth, defending, agreed that the case should be sent to the crown court.

Magistrates declined jurisdiction and Moore was released on unconditional bail to next appear at Newcastle Crown Court on January 20.
