MP Danny Kruger pays tribute to Marlborough College teacher

Jonathan Genton died on the A4 Bath Road in Marlborough after he was struck by a HGV travelling eastbound, near the junction with Golding Avenue, at 10.40am on Thursday, December 4. Jonathan worked at Marlborough College, near the scene of the crash, for many years and was most recently listed on the school's website as an academic consultant. It is understood he previously worked as the college's head of science, having been a physics and astronomy teacher who was actively involved in events at the Blackett Observatory.

Following the fatal crash, a large emergency service response was deployed to the scene including an air ambulance, multiple police vehicles, and land ambulances. A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "At around 10.40am, we received a report that a pedestrian, a man in his 60s, had been involved in a collision with a lorry travelling eastbound on the A4 Bath Road, near the junction with Golding Avenue. "The man was sadly declared dead at the scene."

Mr Kruger said: "This is terrible news, and my condolences are with Mr Genton's family, and all those at Marlborough College.

"While the full facts of this tragic incident are not yet known, I'm dismayed that another fatal accident involving an HGV has taken place in East Wiltshire. "For years I have campaigned and lobbied ministers and councillors to improve road safety on the A4 and also on the north-south road through Marlborough and the villages. "I am continuing to work with Wiltshire Council and various parishes, as well as Wiltshire Police, to try to ensure HGVs travel safely through our county. "This can only be achieved by ensuring they are restricted to roads appropriate for vehicles of their size and continually monitoring speeds on our rural roads." In the days following the fatal crash, floral tributes have been laid at the scene, including photos of Jonathan emblazoned with his name.

"Jonathan was a respected and beloved member of the college community, and his loss is felt across our staff and alumni.

"We extend our sympathies to Jonathan's loved ones, family and friends through this devastating time." Mr Genton is the second Marlborough College staff member known to have died in recent weeks. Physics teacher John Wright, died at his home in the market town on November 3 after reportedly being sacked by the college for alleged inappropriate behaviour on a school trip after working at the prestigious school for 10 years.

Police described it as a "sudden death" and it was not being treated as suspicious.
