Dramatic new footage shows the moment a Mercedes[1] driver crashes into a roundabout, sending his vehicle soaring over several other cars on a busy road - and miraculously survives.

In the CCTV[2] clip, the car is seen speeding down a city road before it clips the kerb at a roundabout, sending it flying through the air. The Mercedes[3] only narrowly avoids hitting the camera as it spins over a bus and two cars, eventually crashing[4] into a pole by the side of the road.

Police in Romania[5]'s northwestern city of Oradea say the incident on Wednesday unfolded when the 49-year-old driver suffered a diabetic episode, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and slam into the roundabout at high speed.

Residents in nearby flats described hearing a loud crashing noise, with some residents emerging from the building as the driver was pulled from the wreckage and rushed to hospital.

According to police, he entered the roundabout the wrong way and hit the central island at high speed, launching his car into the air.

The car was seen soaring through the sky for several seconds, vaulting a hedge before slamming into a metal pole just yards from a petrol station. Thankfully, the car narrowly avoided a large petrol pump, which could have caused a huge explosion if struck.

He was treated for multiple fractures but did not suffer any life-threatening injuries. Doctors later confirmed the diabetic driver had been taken unconscious at the wheel after suffering an episode of severe hypoglycaemia, which occurs when blood sugars reach dangerously low levels.

Police have since suspended his licence for 90 days and issued a fine of 1,600 Romanian lei (GBP270).

In Romania, as in many EU countries and the UK, drivers with diabetes must demonstrate proper awareness of the risks of hypoglycaemia, with those who suffer multiple episodes potentially being deemed unfit to drive.

Earlier this year, shocking footage showed the moment a drink driver flipped his car in 116mph crash[8] - leaving his vehicle so mangled that firefighters had to claw him out. Michael Bailey had to be released from his car by firefighters following the crash on the A1 near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, and a blood test found him to be more than twice the legal alcohol limit

Bailey had to be released from his vehicle by firefighters after the smash at around 1.30am on October 18, 2024, and was "incredibly lucky" to have escaped with minor injuries, police[9] said. He admitted drink driving and dangerous driving, and appeared at Peterborough Magistrates' Court in April where he was handed a 26-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months.

Speaking after sentencing, PC Callum Watson, of Cambridgeshire Police[10], said: "Bailey was incredibly lucky to have suffered only minor injuries from a crash at this speed.

It could have ended much worse, for Bailey or anyone he encountered on the roads that night."
