A30 Cornwall crash: ‘Significant spillage’ after septic tanker overturns
The lorry that overturned on the A30 in Cornwall today[1] was a tanker carrying septic waste, authorities have confirmed.
National Highways said a "significant spillage" needs clearing before the road can reopen, following a serious collision near Truro[2] this afternoon.
Devon and Cornwall Police[3] were called to the A30[4] at Zelah at around 1.50pm today (Wednesday, January 14) to reports of a crash involving a lorry and car. Advertisement Advertisement

One person is reported to have sustained potentially serious injuries. The road was closed in both directions between the A390[5] (Chiverton Cross roundabout, Three Burrows) to the A39[6] (Carland Cross, Carland Cross).
In an update shared at 8.10pm, National Highways advised: "The A30 remains closed in both directions between the A39 near Newquay[7] and A390 Penstraze due to a collision involving an overturned tanker.
Devon & Cornwall Police accident investigations remain on-going."
A travel alert on its website adds: "The A30 in Cornwall is closed in both directions between the A39 at Carland Cross and the A390 at Chiverton Cross due to a collision involving an overturned tanker which is carrying septic waste. Advertisement Advertisement

"Due to the significant amount of spillage from the overturned septic tank, clear up and resurfacing will be required before the westbound carriageway can be re-opened.
"A gulley sucker and the [Environment] Agency are working on scene." The former is a specialised truck with a powerful vacuum system, which can be used to clean streets more quickly.
A suggested diversion route for motorists heading eastbound is as follows: leave the A30 at Chiverton Cross on A3075, turn right at Goonhaven on B3285, rejoining the A30 at Zelah Hill.
Traffic heading westbound can exit the A30 at Chiverton Cross at Chybucca onto the B3284, turn left onto the A3075 rejoining the A30 at Chiverton Cross Roundabout.
